get something that marks the date. a checkride is a specific day at a specific field for a specific rating, and the certificate itself goes in a drawer within a week. the gift that lands is the one with those four things on it: the rating, the field, their name, the date.
what works

- a checkride card. the field's runways to scale on the front with the rating, their name and the date, engraved in anodized aluminum at wallet size. private, instrument, commercial, cfi, any of them. $24, made to order. checkride card.
- the first passenger flight. a new private pilot's first legal passenger is a big deal. book the airplane, be the passenger, pay for the fuel. it costs about what dinner does and they'll remember it longer.
- a set of wings. old-fashioned and still right. a small pin, not a big one.
- a good logbook. if they're moving to a new rating, a fresh professional logbook (or a leather cover for the one they have) marks the step up.
- the whole timeline, if this was the last one. for someone finishing cfi or cfii after years of training, an airport card with the training timeline on the back lists every rating and the date they passed it, first solo to the last checkride, in one column. $24 plus $12 for the timeline back. how the timeline back works.
what to skip
- "congratulations" novelty items. the cake is fine. the mug is not.
- gear for the next rating. let them breathe. the instrument hood can wait a month.
the instructor question

the instructor signed them off, sweated the ride from the ground, and usually gets a handshake. a card of the home field with the instructor's name on the back, from the student, is the gift instructors keep. if you're the student reading this: yes, do it. more gifts for a flight instructor.
if the checkride was somewhere unusual
checkrides happen at whatever field the examiner uses, and it's often not the home field. any field with an identifier works, including outside the us. type the code on the product page and it draws.
